About The Entry

TAJIMI HOUSE is a two-story reinforced concrete residence located on an elevated site in Tajimi, Gifu, Japan. The house was conceived around three essential qualities: the stillness and permanence of concrete, the warmth of timber, and an expansive connection to the surrounding landscape.

Reinforced concrete was selected at the client’s request, reflecting a desire to create a robust home that could be passed on to the next generation. Its solid presence is softened by timber cladding and vertical wooden louvers, creating a balance between strength and warmth.

The elevated site offers panoramic views across the city. A cantilevered balcony extends outward to shield the interior from views from below, while vertical timber louvers filter oblique sightlines from neighboring surroundings. Together, these elements preserve privacy while allowing the living spaces to remain open toward the landscape.

Inside, a double-height living space and carefully positioned openings bring natural light deep into the house. Changing daylight creates shifting shadows across concrete, timber, and white surfaces throughout the day. A raised tatami room connects gently with the living area while providing generous concealed storage beneath the floor.

The second-floor balcony and rooftop terrace extend daily life toward the landscape and offer a privileged view of the city’s summer fireworks.

The client also participated directly in the making of the house, undertaking interior and exterior painting, finishing the timber louvers, and landscaping. This hands-on involvement gives the architecture a personal dimension, embedding the owner’s time and care into the home itself.
